Speculum Gregis of Killashee

Speculum Gregis of Killashee - 1849

Speculum Gregis of Killashee

This small book was held for generations by the ancestors of Philip Wilson of Omagh, who tragically died in 1998. In 2002 his family donated it to the National Archives in Dublin (now designated 2002/95 - Speculum Gregis of the Parish of killashee from the year 1847)

Philip Wilson gave me a copy to use and share as it was a marvellous resource for Killashee genealogy of those who were members of the Church of Ireland congregation.

Note that this is PART 2 of the Speculum Gregis below (written 1849 and updated through 1851). An extraction of the Moffatt and related families from PART 1 (which was written in 1847) is linked here.

Overview

The Census was made in a small Pocket-book by the Rev. James M.H. Strangways, Assistant Curate at Killashee, and the original record is in a beautifully clear handwriting, laid out in a very orderly manner, with seperate entries for each townland and household. However, it was subsequently updated, as further entries under the same townlands, as well as additions to those already in the text, were written in, but with a very different handwriting.

From the above, it is extrapolated that in April 1850 the Pocket-book was given to his succesor by the author, who contrary to the original, had very poor handwriting. Extensive corrections have been made to the text, with numerous households, and individuals within families, crossed-out with lines, possibly indicating they were either dead or no longer there.

The date of the corrections in the pocket-book can perhaps be ascertained by the entry of the Waters family of Clonsheeran, where the name of Elizabeth Waters (alias McCoy), wife of Samuel Waters, has been crossed out, but that of Samuel Waters has not been crossed out. From their tombstone in St. John's Churchyard, Longford, we know that she died on 2 March 1851, and he died subsequently on 16 April 1853, so it would seem that the corrections in the text were made in or about the year 1852. If this reasoning is correct, it is remarkable the number of changes that took place in the inhabitants of the Parish in the space of only three years (1849-1852).

The original text by the Rev. Strangways is still almost completely decipherable, and this can be assumed to represent the facts at the date it was taken. All the annotations and comments added later by his successor in a different handwriting will be indicated below within [SQUARE BRACKETS]. Each family between the dotted lines indicates a different household. After many of the names there is a sign or code added, which it is SPECULATED may mean as follows:-

(a covered chalice in the original) = "Receives Communion"
{A} = "Attends church"
* = not deciphered, but PERHAPS meaning their Protestantism was doubtful
