Moffat families show up in Co. Longford records from the late 1600s well into the 1900s. Tradition says they came with Sir Arthur Forbes, perhaps circa 1655.

Emigration:
1. In 1837 Samuel Moffatt & family emigrated to Cumberland Township, Russell Co. in Upper Canada. One son moved to Huron Co., Ont. Later descendants across North America, but especially Ont., South Dakota and Manitoba. I have a database of 2,000 descendants. tmoffatt@nbnet.nb.ca

2. In 1847 David Moffett & family (related, but not brothers) left for St. Lawrence Co., New York State and then to Flint, MI.

3. Still others of these families stayed in Co. Longford or moved to other parts of Ireland, including Dublin. One of these, Sir Thomas William Moffett, won the Gold Medal at Trinity College, Dublin, was an educator & administrator of note, & was knighted in 1896.
