of Parish Killashee
In memory of Philip Wilson of Portadown who passed along this wonderful set of records in August 1998, but died of a brain hemmorhage 2 November 1998
Assistant Curate, Rev. James M. H. Strangways, compiled a notebook detailing the families of Killashee Parish - Speculum Gregis literally means a 'mirror of who is part of the group'. The original is in the possession of Philip Wilson's family in Portadown, Co. Armagh. Philip Wilson was a descendant of the Wilson and Moffat families of Killashee.
Section One of
the Speculum Gregis was completed in November 1846 and then updated
on a regular basis until a "new edition" was completed
as Section Two on January 1 1849. The Moffats and Shaws in Section
One are:
Killashee Townland. THOMAS MOFFAT (Wife's family are R.
Catholics) Entry then scored out and "Gone to Boyle"
written beside it.
Bonoghlye Townland.
JAMES MOFFATT AND HIS WIFE ELIZABETH (BOLE). James Moffatt's
birth is recorded as "perhaps 1775". Their children
are Anne (b. 3 January 1823), John (b. 7 October 1827) and Margaret
(b. 24 November 1830). Also living with them is their grandson
James Shaw (b. April 1840). This entry is also scored out and
"Ejected - now living in Killashee" written beside it.
Ballinakill Townland. JOHN WILSON AND HIS WIFE MARY (MOFFATT).
He was born on 12 September 1794 and her year of birth is given
as 1819. Children entered are Sarah Jane (by first wife), born
in January 1832 and "at school, Ballymahon", Alexander
born February 1835, (by second wife) Elizabeth, born 6 May 1846,
and twins Hannah and Mary Anne, born 11 May 1848.
Ballinakill Townland. SAMUEL SHAW (b. about 1782) is living
there with his daughters Margaret (b. 24 August 1830) and Catherine
(b. 26 April 1832). Both the daughter's names have been subsequently
scored out and "Gone to America 1848" written beside
the entry for Margaret and "Dead, September '48" written
beside the entry for Catherine. Living in the same house is Samuel's
brother, THOMAS SHAW and his son Robert (b. 1838).
Ballinakill Townland. ROBERT SHAW AND HIS WIFE MARGARET (McCORD).
Robert was born on 13 March 1791. Their children are Margaret
(b. 20 February 1823), Henry (b. 10 March 1825), Anne (b. 14 January
1827), Robert (b. 8 December 1828), Charles (b. 9 June 1830),
Mary (b. 12 March 1834), John (b. 16 July 1838) and Elizabeth
(b. 26 May 1841)
Ballyclare Townland. JAMES MOFFATT AND HIS WIFE ELIZABETH (BOLE)
and their children Anne (b. 3 January 1823), John (b. 7 October
1827) and Margaret (b. 24 November 1830). Also living with them
is Grandson James Shaw (b. April 1840). The names of Anne and
John have been subsequently scored out and "Gone to America"

Corrigarrow Townland. RICHARD CAMPBELL AND HIS WIFE MARY (BOLE).
They were married on 12 May 1819. Their children are William (b.
1830), Fanny (b. 1834) and John (b. 1836). William's name has
been subsequently scored out and "In the Police, 1848"
written beside it.
Clondra Townland. WILLIAM MOFFAT is living with the family
of "John O'Flaherty, Esq., and his wife". The O'Flaherty
children are John Jeremiah (b. 1843) and Charles ....... (b. 1846).
All the O'Flaherty names (but not William Moffat's) have been
subsequently scored out and "Gone" written beside them.
Grillagh Townland. MARGARET SHAW (neé BOLE). She
had been married to the late Robert Shaw on 18 August 1794. Their
son is Ambrose (b. 1805) but also listed are two Grandchildren,
Mary (b. 1832) and John (b. 1834). Living with Widow Margaret
Shaw are her daughter and son-in-law EDWARD TRELFORD AND ELIZA
(SHAW). Eliza's birth date is given as 9 February 1810. The two
children of edward and Eliza are Jane (b. 5 may 1844) and Isabella
(b. June 1846).
Grillagh Townland. DAVID MOFFATT AND HIS WIFE ANNE (HAYDEN).
David was born on 14 August 1793 and their children are Kate (b.
1831) and William (b. 1833)
Derryadd Townland. JAMES SHAW AND HIS WIFE BRIDGET McINTYRE.
They were married on 29 May 1819 and their birthdays were February
1784 for James and March 1792 for Bridget. Their children are
Alexander (b. 7 July 1827), William (b. 14 July 1833) and Samuel
(b. 23 November 1835)
"Of uncertain residence" are GEORGE ONION AND CATHERINE
(MOFFAT) HIS WIFE. They appear to have four children but only
the name of the second child, Julia, is given.
