Charleton Marriage Gratuity

Charleton Marriage Gratuity List - From the late 1700s through much of the 1800s a private charity gave a small sum to 'honest' Protestant couples in Co. Longford and Meath. Recipients were the children of day labourers. Since these families generally did not have leases, the records are especially valuable. The records are located in the National Archives of Ireland, Dublin.

Set 1 includes all known records for Moffat families in Co. Longford.
Set 2 includes expanded information involving some of the records mentioned in Set 1

DEATH FROM FRIGHT.- On Thursday evening, during the thunderstorm which swept over this place, a woman, the wife of a respectable farmer named Moffatt, residing at Killashee, about four miles from this town, came to her death in consequence of a fright received by her at that time. It appears that a flash of lightning struck a cow belonging to her, killing her instantaneously, the poor woman was so horrified at the result that she was seized with a fit, from which she never recovered, death ensuing in about 24 hours afterwards. She was advanced in years, which added very much to the fatality of the shock she received. Anne Hayden
